When Upper Room began to be used for
Air Disinfection?

UVC rays were used to disinfect water in 1877 and were later tested in many studies as a method to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Upper-room UV devices were installed in Philadelphia schools in the 1930s, and a 5-year study found that classrooms with UV were less likely to contract infectious diseases such as smallpox and mumps. Since tuberculosis is still a deadly bacterium that spreads through the air, by the 1960s it has been used in prisons, hospitals, shelters, etc. to control the spread of TB. Upper-room uvgi applications were made to the places and as a result of these applications, a serious decrease was observed in the spread of diseases.

Ventilation of buildings through central ventilation and the development of the pharmaceutical industry have hindered the development and spread of such applications and technology. Until the effect of the SARS virus emerged in the early 2000s.

Upper Room UVGI applications have been on the agenda since the beginning of 2000, and WHO (World Health Organization), ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers), CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), CIE (The International Commission on Standards and publications related to upper room uvgi application have been published by institutions and organizations such as Illumination), EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency), CIBSE (The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers), REHVA (Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations). .

With the pandemic created by the COVID-19 virus that emerged in late 2019, articles published one after another showed that UVGI technology is now indispensable.

Now, UVGI applications are among the most important applications under the name Engineering Controls. It is not only used in hospitals, but especially in offices, cafes, markets, etc., where people use it heavily. It has been started to be used safely in places.
